Hey everyone! Keisha and Nikita here from Travel Without Stress.

Building a big travel fund for your next vacation doesn't have to mean sitting down with a boring, restrictive spreadsheet that makes you feel deprived. In fact, one of the absolute best ways to make saving money easy, visual, and even fun is by using savings challenges.

Savings challenges break down scary financial targets into manageable, gamified steps. Whether you want to save a quick $1,000 for a weekend getaway or stash away $10,000 for an international bucket-list trip, here are our 12 favorite savings challenges to help you build your vacation fund!

12 Fun & Effective Savings Challenges

  • 1. The 100-Envelope Challenge (Save $5,050 in 100 Days): Label 100 envelopes from 1 to 100. Every day, draw an envelope at random and put in that cash amount (e.g., Envelope #42 gets $42). By day 100, you’ll have $5,050 saved!
  • 2. The 10,000-Envelope Double Challenge (Save $10,100 in 100 Days): Take 100 envelopes, label them Day 1 through Day 100, and multiply the day number by 2 (Day 1 = $2, Day 50 = $100, Day 100 = $200). After 100 days, you'll have $10,100 ready for your next big trip.
  • 3. The 52-Week Savings Challenge (Save $1,378 in 1 Year): Save the dollar amount that matches the week of the year (Week 1 = $1, Week 52 = $52). Want to get the hardest part out of the way early? Do it in reverse starting with $52 in Week 1!
  • 4. The $20 Per Week Challenge (Save $1,040 in 1 Year): Simple and painless. Commit to transferring or stashing $20 every single week. It’s small enough that you barely notice it leaving your account, but adds up to over a grand in a year.
  • 5. The $5 Bill Incremental Challenge (Save $6,890 in 1 Year): Start by saving $5 in Week 1, and add $5 to your weekly target each week (Week 2 = $10, Week 52 = $260). By the end of 52 weeks, you'll have almost $7,000 in your travel account!
  • 6. The $1 Bill Daily Stash (Save $1,378 in 1 Year): Save $1 in Week 1, increasing by $1 every week until Week 52. Alternatively, just commit to putting every single physical $1 bill you get as change into a jar!
  • 7. The 10K 52-Week Challenge (Save $10,000 in 1 Year): If you're planning an epic international trip or luxury cruise, set up an automatic weekly transfer of $200 per week. In 52 weeks, you’ll hit your $10,000 goal smoothly.
  • 8. The No-Spend Challenge: Pick a period (a weekend, a week, or a month) where you buy only absolute essentials like groceries and bills. Cut out takeout, coffee runs, and online shopping, and transfer all the money you saved directly into your travel fund.
  • 9. The Weather Wednesday Challenge: Every Wednesday morning, check the high temperature in your city and save that exact dollar amount. (If it's 75°F out, put $75 in savings!). It’s a hilarious, dynamic way to build your fund during warmer months.
  • 10. The Year-Matching Challenge (Save $2,026 in 2026): Match your savings target to the calendar year! Using a tracker template, make varied weekly contributions ranging from $5 to $80 until you hit exactly $2,026 by December 31st.
  • 11. Roll the Dice Challenge: Roll a pair of standard dice every week (or day!). Whatever number you land on is the dollar amount you save. Want to turbocharge it? Add a zero to your roll—a roll of 5 means you save $50 that week!
  • 12. The Incremental Nickel Challenge (Save $3,339.60 in 1 Year): Perfect to do with kids! Day 1 you save 5¢ (1 nickel), Day 2 you save 10¢ (2 nickels), Day 3 you save 15¢ (3 nickels), building up to Day 365 ($18.25). By the end of the year, you’ll have over $3,300 in coin savings!

How to Supercharge Your Savings Results

Pro TipWhy It Works
Use a High-Yield Savings Account (HYSA)Don't keep challenge money in a traditional 0.01% checking account. Put it in an HYSA so your money earns high interest while you build your fund.
Pause Before Impulse BuysImplement a 48-hour rule on non-essential online shopping and move the money you almost spent right into your travel bucket.
Use Visual TrackersPrint out coloring trackers or use physical envelope binders. Seeing your progress visually creates momentum and stops you from quitting!
